ACTION PLAYBOOK:
Help Your Employer Step Up
We need bold public policy that matches the scale and urgency of climate change.
If your employer isn’t loud and proud on the sustainability front, it can be difficult to turn them into a forceful climate policy advocate overnight. We know that organizations large and small can be highly influential stakeholders within the federal policy landscape. But it’s often intimidating for an organization’s leadership to risk taking the climate advocacy plunge when they haven’t yet dipped their toes into climate action.
There’s psychology behind this idea: if an organization’s leaders begin to identify as climate-conscious, they’re more likely to feel comfortable taking political risks in the interest of aligning their organization’s image with its actions.
One concrete step an organization can take is offering low-carbon retirement portfolio options, which often have comparable average returns to traditional target date funds without the financial risks or carbon emissions associated with fossil fuels.
In this action, follow the steps outlined by our partner As You Sow to make changes to your employer’s retirement portfolio offerings.
