ACTION PLAYBOOK:
Urge Your State to Regulate Emissions
We need bold public policy that matches the scale and urgency of climate change.
State public utilities commissions (PUCs) regulate the electric utility companies that serve 72% of U.S. electricity customers and have authority over pricing, reliability, and safety. However, their regulatory scope does not typically include greenhouse gas emissions.
PUCs get their authority from state legislatures and governors, but most of the legislation granting them oversight of utilities dates back to the early 20th century. It is important to update these statutes to address modern concerns about greenhouse gases to make it easier for PUCs to enforce state-level clean energy standards.
As a constituent, you have the power to hold your state legislators accountable and can advocate for updating PUC authority. Your voice is particularly influential at this level of government.
