ACTION PLAYBOOK:

Contact Your Public Utility Commission

Public Utility Commissions can craft climate-smart regulations that hold utility companies accountable.

Every state has a Public Utility Commission (PUC) that oversees gas and electric utility companies. While hefty policymaking is left to state legislatures and energy offices, the commission can craft rules that push utilities toward decarbonization and energy efficiency. They hear from the public much less often than state legislators do, which makes it all the more influential when changemakers weigh in.

Heads up! In your state, this group of regulators might be called a Public Service Commission, Corporation Commission, or something similar. It’s all the same!
