Call Voters

The Goal: Boost voter turnout for the climate candidate in a key congressional district.

Why bother? Phone banking is effective. It’s second only to in-person canvassing for increasing voter turnout. Even when you don’t end up converting a fence-sitter to a voter, you are collecting valuable data that the candidate’s campaign can use to target more effectively as it gets closer to the election.

The great thing about phone banking is that you don’t need to be an expert about the candidate or the district/state—the script will provide you with all the information you need. Every volunteer’s work is impactful due to the sheer number of voters.

Identify the phone bank you’d like to join today

Be sure to check the Timing column! Phone banks are open until 8:30pm local time. If you’re calling into a district in Eastern Time, you will need to switch to a different phone bank (or action) at 8:30pm ET.

Get a handle on the talking points for today’s phone bank by previewing the script linked in the table above. You can always add your own personal flair to the script, but be sure to ask the key questions so you collect voter data for the partner organization.

Note: The script automatically pops up on the dialer as you make calls. This step is just to preview the script in a low-pressure environment.

If you’re calling on an Hour of Action, here are a few extra pointers:

  • Phone banking can feel lonely, but it’s truly a collective effort. Share the twists and turns of your phone banking experience with the group in the Zoom chat! Drop a “+” in the chat if someone commits to vote on the phone with you!

  • Select Leave Computer Audio on Zoom so you can use your computer speakers and microphone for the dialer. It’s the “ultimate mute” button. You can’t hear anyone else, and they can’t hear you. Use the chat to communicate with the group, and don’t forget to rejoin audio at the end of the hour to debrief!
