Stop Methane Leaks

Advocacy Action Plan

U.S. natural gas pipelines leak methane, and it’s a serious climate (and safety!) problem. Our Public Utility Commissions have the power to fix it, but they rarely hear from the public.

The six-step Action Plan!

A strategic framework to focus your advocacy and maximize productivity. Start with Playbook #1 and move through the rest at your own pace.

Each Action Playbook can be accomplished in under one hour. Take action any time on your own, or join a festive, facilitated Hour of Action. Whether on Zoom or in person, you’ll take action alongside fellow climate-concerned changemakers.

    • #1: Contact Your Public Utility Commission (PUC): These are the decision-makers that can require utilities to stop methane leaks. We advocate directly to them first and then try to reach them via key stakeholders (Actions #2-5).

    • #2 Contact your State Legislators Our goal: inspire our state legislators to pressure the PUCs to draft stronger regulations.  PUCs follow mandates from the state legislatures, which means they pay close attention to what legislators say and do – even when it’s not official legislation.

    • #3 Contact Your Utility Company - Utility companies own the natural gas pipelines that leak methane. They need to know there’s accountability from the public to abide by existing or future leak-detection regulations.

    • #4 Get the Word Out - Utility companies and PUCs operate in the dark – and sunlight is a natural disinfectant. Spreading the word—among neighbors, media, and beyond—builds support and momentum for meaningful action.

    • #5 Meet with your State Legislator - Just like Action #2, but instead of emailing and calling the office, you’ll meet face-to-face with your state legislator. These “Constituent Meetings” are one of the most effective ways to encourage your elected officials to take action.

    • #6 Contacting Governors – PUCs often work with the governor’s economic or environmental offices – and in some states, the Governor even appoints the commissioners directly. It’s important to shore up support to address methane leaks from all sides.
